The Impact of Employment on Elder`s Quality of Life

Abstract
There are studies for factors affecting the elderly¡¯s quality of life, but few studies proving the relationship between employment and quality of life have been conducted. The aim of this study was to find out how employment affects the elderly¡¯s quality of life. The baseline survey was conducted to 69 elderly unemployed persons who were receiving guard or delivery training from June 14th to June 30th in 2006 in the elderly welfare center of Seoul. The questionnaire consisted of socioeconomic status and quality of life(self-esteem, self-rated health, family relations, personal relations, economic conditions, and leisure). The follow-up survey data were collected from the 34 elderly persons(19 reemployed persons, 5
reemployment scheduled persons, and 10 non-reemployed persons) from August 21st to November 24th. Among the reemployed, self-esteem, family relations, interpersonal relations, economic conditions were significantly increased but leisure was aggravated. Among the reemployment-scheduled, interpersonal relations was significantly increased. Among the non-reemployed persons, self-esteem and self-rated health were significantly aggravated. The was no significant evidence that reemployment improving self-rated health in the reemployed or the reemployment-scheduled. The employment, as for social activity, may increase the elderly¡¯s quality of life in terms of self-esteem, family relations, interpersonal relations, economic conditions.
